by Matt Ball on July 29, 2009

MIT’s SENSEable City Laboratory is conducting research on the travels of trash. The research involves the use of smart tag sensors that are attached to different trash types and then tracked through the trash and recycling system of cities around the globe. The first test involved items in Boston, with the whereabouts viewable live via a Blog. Future tests are planned for Seattle, New York City and London.

The researchers big rollout in Seattle is planned to help document the city’s sophisticated recycling system. The aim is to trace trash routes and to help make trash collection and disposal more efficient.
