Mobility and Sensor All in One

by Matt Ball on January 19, 2010

You likely heard about the Copenhagen Wheel from last month’s COP-15 talks. I was immediately impressed with this concept from MIT’s SENSEable City Lab that installs on the rear hub of your bicycle to turn it into an e-Bike, but I somehow overlooked the sensor aspects of the design.

Not only is the hub a means to improve mobility, it also contains sensors to measure and monitor the environment and map pollution, traffic congestion and road conditions. The concept is designed to interface with a mobile phone to help individuals track their fitness goals and navigate the city. It also interacts with other wheels to form a sensor web for sharing information between a collection of users.

Watch the following video for details on the project. While the project harnessed the expertise of Ducati Energia and other commercial firms, there are no details yet about the commercialization of this concept.
