A news item in BBC News discusses a breakthrough by NASA scientists in the effort to forecast earthquakes. Electrical disturbances in the atmosphere have been linked to impending earthquakes in the ground below. Signals were detected days before the recent devastating China earthquake and were correlated to the event. An article in the Wall Street Journal delves a little more deeply into the scientific theories surrounding this signal.
Research is now underway with NASA and experts in the United Kingdom to explore the possibilities of a space-based early warning system. The quake in China has led to a growing cry for an efficient early warning system for natural disasters in that country. Japan has recently launched an earthquake early warning system, but there are reports of failures during several recent low-level quakes.
A global remote-sensing system would fit beautifully into the plans and purpose of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems.

I’d sure like to chew the fat with Ted about these ideas. I’m just another yokel who can read a chart, but I share his opinions about the critical nature of our situation. Please read on and pass this on to Mr. Turner. Thanks.
From the tipping point:
Land-born ice melts and lightens the mass on Greenland and Antarctica. Those landmasses rise as weight melts and runs off. The water is spun to the equatorial bulge changing the angular momentum of the planet. That puts a major tweak of pressure on the tectonic plates. The rising of G-land starts a crack at the top of the mid-Atlantic ridge which opens the plate boundary like a zipper spewing lava into the Atlantic from 80′N to 60′S. Other plate boundaries do the same , unleashing undersea volcanism planet-wide. This warms the ocean and steams the atmosphere quickly, which kicks the thermo-halene drive off-line and gives us the weather phenomena something like “The Day After Tomorrow”.
This whole scene replete with tsunamis, rogue waves, falling sea level, massive releases of methane from the ocean floor, earthquakes and possibly even the popping of the Yellowstone dome. The poles get covered with collosal new ice caps which, over 10sky migrate toward the mid-latitudes, melting and moving even as the global temp decreases.
That’s the only way the dots connect from reading the IPCC ice core data charts from 650ky as depicted in their papers and in Gore’s book, “An Inconvenient Truth”.
Looks to me that we are the organic bloom which in the last 10ky of this 110ky cycle is either causing or in sync with the natural cycle of the six or so cycles shown on the chart. Perhaps the previous bloom was wildebeasts…
How else could these steep spikes of temp/CO2 be defeated and reversed in such a short time?
The previous cycles were obviously survivable by some humans and other species. Due to our fossil fuel-burning exravaganza, this one may be different.
The information in the ice cores was, of course, only available to be harvested because the ice did not completely melt off G-land and Antarctica before the reversing mechanism kicked in on the previous cycles.
Correlation of the thicknesses of the ice core samples/year/season, and examination of any data available from the magnetic striping on both sides of the mid-Atlantic ridge would add to the accuracy of time-remaining guesses for disaster preparedness (if any).
