The Jason-2 satellite, also known as the Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM), is set to launch June 15 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The satellite is a venture between four partners: EUMETSAT, NASA, NOAA and the French Space Agency (CNES).
Ocean altimetry is a critical measurement for meteorology, particularly for short range forecasts. Jason-2 follows in the footsteps of Jason-1 and TOPEX/Poseidon that have been monitoring climate and rising sea levels continuously for the past 15 years. This satellite will operate in conjunction with Jason-1 for broader and more continuous coverage, and will ensure continued operation.
Sea level heights are of growing concern due to climate change and sea-level rise. People in coastal areas stand to benefit the most from added coverage, with better seasonal storm and surge predictions.
