The American Planning Association gathered experts to outline the planning and design principles that lead to a healthy urban forest. The resulting framing document suggests to put trees first in the planning process. The experts say that it’s important to know the history of the site, to seek partners and to make the investment in the urban forest financially sustainable.
There will be a presentation on this topic at the upcoming National Conference on Urban Ecosystems in Orlando, Florida from May 28-30th. American Forests organizes this event, and there are a number of very interesting topics that will be presented.
You can read an outline of the APA’s urban forestry recommendations on redOrbit. There’s also an Urban Forestry research page on the American Planning Association website.
