Private Emergency Info Network Offered in Seattle

by Matt Ball on December 3, 2007

urbancanyons.jpgCoastal Environmental Systems has officially launched a new social networked emergency information service called URBANCANYONS in downtown Seattle. The online service provides real-time air quality information from a network of sensors as well as 9-1-1 information feeds. Registered users can also contribute their own observations.

The system is designed to link emergency responders to property owners, building managers, security personnel and anyone responsible for taking action in case of an emergency.

The service has a network of air sensors that monitor wind speed and direction as well as the presence of contaminants in the air. The service also monitors 9-1-1 alerts and sends targeted alerts within a 4-block radius along to subscribers.

Coastal Environmental Systems is building on its deployment of fixed and portable radio-controlled weather stations to add a service component for the community. The ability to share information between subscribers via the Web is a helpful approach that goes beyond the typical web mapping after an incident has occurred.
