Real Estate Drop Means Conservation Boom

The fall in land prices in many regions of the country is leading to a boom in open space preserved by conservation groups, and taxpayer plans. In San Diego, voters approved what has amounted to $850 million for environmental programs back in 2004, that is now being spent on open space.

Conservationists are encouraged that public support remains solid despite the financial crisis. On Nov. 4, voters across the United States approved 62 of 87 ballot measures to acquire property for habitat, parks and open space, according to analysts at The Trust for Public Land in Boston. At $7.3 billion, it was the biggest single-day funding commitment on record.
