A Utah company, S5 Wireless, is looking to offer an alternative to GPS tracking that would be smaller, cheaper and disposable. The device would allow for tracking inside and out, but requires a local network. When the battery wears out on the small chip, it’s time to get a new one. It’s also not good for navigation as the device simply speaks to the network and is accurate to with 30-45 feet. The low cost ($3-$4 per chip) makes it attractive for things like pet and luggage tracking.
