The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.4 million grant for a project that will harness 9,000 high school students to test the water quality of the Hudson and St. Lawrence rivers. The Innovative Technology Experience for Students and Teachers (ITEST) Grant goes to the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries and Clarkson University to expand their Student Enabled Network of Sensors for the Environment using Innovative Technology (SENSE IT) curriculum.
SENSE IT will teach students how to design, build, test, deploy water quality sensors as ell as interpret and report on the data that they collect. It’s a long-term commitment that gives teachers a hands-on exercise that brings together training in science, math, engineering, environment and technical skills.
What a great idea to harness the capacity of students for sensor web design and deployment!
