Sustainable Wildlife Management Grows in Importance

Given the fact that the human population is rapidly approaching the ecological carrying capacity of the planet, wildlife management will have an increasing impact on our quality of life. Cooperative approaches are becoming more necessary as the world continues to urbanize.

Professor Ron Ydenberg of Simon Fraser University is assessing the wildlife management efforts of the Netherlands. This highly urbanized country is dealing with soaring wild boar and goose populations, and looking for ways to control the impacts and sizes of these populations. The country is looking to conservation efforts that have returned predators to ecosystems such as in Yellowstone National Park in the United States as possible models moving forward.
