System Dynamics and the Bathtub Effect

by Matt Ball on January 28, 2009

There’s a great post on the NYT Dot Earth Blog that describes climate change in terms of the bathtub effect. The premise is that the climate is a bathtub and the drain is natural carbon sinks such as the forests and oceans. Right now we’re pouring twice as much carbon into the bathtub as the drain can siphon off, leading to a potential catastrophic flood. Without swift and meaningful action from all individuals, we won’t be able to remedy the situation.
