TerraEchos Commercializes Navy Sensor Technology and Partners with IBM

by Matt Ball on April 21, 2010

TerraEchos has licensed acoustic sensor technology from the U.S. Navy that uses fiber-optic sensors buried in the ground or water to gather real-time information by profiling sound. This sensor technology has now been coupled with the IBM InfoSphere Streams in order to rapidly analyze the information from thousands of real-time feeds. This partnership addresses the hurdle of sensor fusion, and sets up TerraEchos as a Sensor as Service vendor.

The sensor technology acoustically analyzes sound patterns to determine the nature of the sound profile, classifying the noise, and  determining its location and trajectory if it’s moving. This sensor network is being promoted for surveillance and monitoring of critical infrastructure. Test examples include the use of sensors on oil pipelines, with sound patterns used to detect changes in flow dynamics or impacts on the pipeline exterior.
