Preetha Pulusani, director of Rolta India, started her talk at Map World Forum by questioning why geospatial technology is still considered expensive, stating that it’s because the value proposition is not always clear to decision makers. To get beyond this perception, geospatial must become more of a strategic part of operations, and Pulusani feels that the route is through geospatial fusion.
Rolta is working on a product to enable geospatial fusion in an enterprise regardless of platform or language, with the vision of providing transparent services tat can be accessed and updated by all. The idea of fusion takes advantage of all past development work that have stood up multiple databases and customized solutions, providing a conduit for each of these disparate systems to talk with each other. Pulling data and documents together through a configurable web services approach goes well beyond the web mapping paradigm, creating a rich web client that’s much more than just maps.
This vision reminds me of the direction that Intergraph was taking toward solutions. To date, there aren’t many details about Rolta’s new fusion product, but I’m told that it will soon appear on the Rolta website.

Visual Fusion, software created by IDV Solutions, is exactly what you are describing. It is a very powerful platform for the enterprise to quickly assemble composite applications and mashups of GIS, enterprise, and cloud-based content, united in the context of location, and offered in an Enterprise 2.0 look and feel. Anyone who is interested in applications like this should check out the demo’s on IDV Solutions website (http://idvsolutions.com/demos_overview.aspx).
