Just this week, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed 21 members to a high-level panel on global sustainability. The focus of this group is to tackle poverty on a global scale, address climate change, and establish guidelines for economic growth achieved in an environmentally-sensitive way.
“We need to promote low carbon growth and strengthen our resilience to the impacts of climate change. We need to address the interlinked global challenges of poverty, hunger, water, energy security and sanitation. In short, we need a blueprint for a more livable, prosperous and sustainable future for all,” Ban said.
The panel is charges with delivering a report by the end of next year in advance of the 2012 UN conference on sustainable development in Rio de Janeiro.
