The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded their meeting in Valencia, Spain, with the strongest warning to date about global warming. The scientific panel states that unless we act, there will be inevitable human suffering and the threat of extinction for some species.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said the potential impact of global warming is “so severe and so sweeping that only urgent, global action will do.”
The Summary for Policymakers, condenses thousands of pages of data and computer models from six years of research compiled by the IPCC. In compiling the summary report a large number of compromises were necessary and every line of the summary needed to be reviewed by participating governments, which makes the strong tone of this document even more remarkable.
The report is expected to guide policy makers meeting in Bali, Indonesia, next month to discuss an agreement to succeed the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.
