As discussed in my previous post, I’m devoting my energy to the creation of a new media venture centered on sustainable development. I’ve teamed with Jeff Thurston, former editor of Geo:Connexions, to push the use of spatial tools for the development of sustainable environments.
As former editors of geospatial-centric publications, we bring a strong understanding of macro-level modeling and enterprise-enabled decision support tools to the burgeoning field of sustainable development. We feel that the timing is right to move beyond just the tool sets of GIS or CAD, and focus on the process of sustainable design.
Building upon a foundation of design principles and infrastructure disciplines, Vector1 Media pursues visualization, modeling, simulation and sensor input for holistic urban planning and management. Our goal is to realize the principle of sustainable living through successful and sustainable economic development. Vector1 Media will push for the adoption of integrated spatially-based systems and knowledge where advances can be achieved with high-impact returns.
There’s a growing understanding of the need for more thoughtful urban planning and infrastructure development, with a strong focus on environmental impact, green building and long-term, low-cost maintenance. A number of recent news posts have further enhanced my resolve to promote the use of spatial tools for more efficient sustainable development. Among these are discussions that, “Larger Cities are More Efficient,” and that the, “World’s Population Now Predominantly Urban.”
The timing is right to bring spatial tools to bear on this compelling purpose. I’m excited to explore this area, connect with users that are pushing the use of the tools in this domain, and furthering the impact of technology that can make a lasting difference.
