Two Cities Set Course for Stringent Building Standards

by Matt Ball on April 22, 2008

Both Los Angeles and San Francisco are considering stringent building standards that have been pushed and promoted by their mayors. San Francisco’s Gavin Newsom has set forth a Task Force on Green Building that has reported detailed recommendations that soon will be considered by city government. Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, has also defined a green building program aimed at reducing emissions and supporting the Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) standards.

Both plans grease the planning wheels if the building meets a specific LEED standard. The fast-tracked timetable of going green is one of many ways the two cities are incentivizing the move to green building. Both cities realize a need to dramatically reduce emissions, with L.A. pledging a reduction of 30% below 1990 levels by 2030, and San Francisco pedging 20% below 1990 by 2012.

An online feature from the Los Angeles Times compares the impact of the two plans.
