Tests are ongoing in the United Kingdom on a voluntary system known as Intelligent Speed Adaptation that would monitor vehicle speeds and automatically control the vehicle depending on the road’s speed limit. The technology is available for three different types of installation — an advisory voice warning, a system that automatically brakes or cuts fuel supply, but that can be overridden, and a system that takes complete control that can’t be modified.
It’s reported that the biggest hurdle for implementation is a comprehensive digital map of Britain with speed limits for every road.
