Urban Immersion Tour Continues

by Matt Ball on April 27, 2008

I’m on the road again tomorrow, this time to the American Planning Association’s 100th National Planning Conference in Las Vegas. The event has a strong GIS and technology track as well as several sessions that speak to regional planning and the creation of green communities. This event comes on the heels of last week’s Ecocity World Summit that I attended in San Francisco. These events should provide me with a good grounding in urban design and planning issues. I’m calling it my Urban Immersion Tour, and would love to speak to anyone that’s also attending.

Jack Dangermond will be delivering the Tuesday morning keynote at APA on the topic of, “Creating Our Future: The Geographic Perspective.” The abstract for the talk discusses the design principals of Ian McHarg and how today’s emerging technology now support McHarg’s full vision to “consider all the factors as explicit information in planning decisions.”

I’ll also be meeting up with Douglas Farr, author of “Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design with Nature” and chair of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED standard for Neighborhood Development. I recently reviewed the book here, and look forward to delving into the approaches and technologies that are being applied to regional sustainable planning strategies.

I’ll be blogging regularly from this event over the next three days.
