The U.S. Geological Survey has produced the first national assessment of the geothermal power production capacity of the United States in more than 30 years. The assessment estimates a 9,057 Megawatts-electric (MWe) power generation potential from identified domestic sources, another 30,033 MWe from undiscovered sources and a potential 517,800 MWe potential from unconventional high temperature sources.
The USGS conducted detailed evaluations at 241 identified geothermal systems on private and public land. Geothermal systems in national parks that are closed to development weren’t included in the assessment.
More details about geothermal resources can be found on the USGS Geothermal Research page.
