The Autodesk-sponsored e2 design series season three is now available for viewing online. Programs on the rebuilding of New Orleans, the architecture of Renzo Piano, and the rebirth of Melbourne are all available for viewing now. Coming soon are programs on “The Village Architect” and “A Garden in Cairo.” These programs are being delivered on the Internet one day in advance of regular PBS program scheduling, and the online version can be accessed at any time.
I watched a good portion of the Melbourne episode, and was delighted by the livability and sustainability focus of the piece. The city has done amazing things to rejuvenate the downtown, reduce emissions, and create buildings of great energy efficiency. The take away for me on this piece was the effectiveness of the local government to create a world-leading sustainable city. A number of the initiatives focused on showing businesses how they could profit from the revitalized urban core. After the city remodeled several old industrial sites into housing units, developers followed the trend and created an urban renaissance. The Australian drought is also credited with spurring a lot of the innovation, because it has driven home the need to think sustainably.
