PR - As part of AGI Cymru's plans to evaluate the Geographic Information
(GI) Strategy for Wales, AGI is asking stakeholders to put forward
their views.
Available on AGI Cymru's web pages of the AGI website,
a new survey is asking GI practitioners about progress since the last
strategy, published in 2003, and what developments should be looked at
next.
The survey is the first step in a review of the way
Wales harnesses geographic information. With the support of the Welsh
Assembly Government, the review looks to build on recent developments
and incorporate the EU INSPIRE Directive and the soon to be published
UK Location Strategy (UKLS).
The EU INSPIRE Directive
provides a common European framework that defines what needs to be done
to achieve interoperable and integrated data across the continent. A
joined‑up approach to creating, recording and using GI will benefit
organisations and businesses across the EU, including Wales.
The
UKLS is widely expected to align with the INSPIRE framework and a
common governing body to coordinate both elements is likely to be
announced.
Keith Jones, Chair of AGI Cymru says: "Reviewing
the GI Strategy for Wales at this time is vitally important. With
INSPIRE and the UKLS due to be introduced, Wales needs to incorporate
these whilst still retaining the individual elements that the country
needs. This is also an ideal time to gauge the views and needs of the
Welsh GI community and account for the changes in the industry like the
rise of web-based services and neo-geography."
