PR - During the last month, some new developments have been introduced in the European Soil Portal. In order to further facilitate the awareness of the Soil Portal, we send the latest updates that took place during the last month.
Soil of the European Union: This report is based on the information contained in the European Soil Database, the result of more than ten years of fruitful effort and collaboration between the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, and Europe’s leading soil science institutions. The current report overviews soils of the European Union classified in a new standard which is the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB; FAO 1998). This system originates from the approach of the FAO to correlate soil resources globally. The advantage of using the system of the FAO is that the soil resources of the European Union are integrated into the world-wide context.
Wind Erosion: Average field shape parameters are important for estimating wind erosion risk. The parameter reported is based on the fractal net evolution segmentation approach and a fuzzy classification of the Image2000 satellite archive, only for agricultural areas. Values reported are based on large, clearly discernible fields, which are prone to wind erosion. In total the following 6 maps are presented in 2 different formats (PDF, JPEG).
Harmonized World Soil Database v 1.0: The Harmonized World Soil Database is a 30 arc-second raster database with over 15000 different soil mapping units that combines existing regional and national updates of soil information worldwide (European Soil Database, SOTER, Soil Map of China, WISE) with the information contained within the 1:5 000 000 scale FAO-UNESCO Soil Map of the World (FAO, 19711981). 1st Experts Meeting on Biodiversity: The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission organised an experts meeting (Ispra, 19-20 June 2008) in support of its contribution to the Soil Biodiversity component of the EU’s Soil Thematic Strategy and the Proposal for a Soil Framework Directive. Find the presentations of the meeting.
