‘Hybrid’ Power Plant A First North of Berlin

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel broke ground for the world's first hybrid power plant north of Berlin in the town of Prenzlau. The project represents leading edge advances in power generation, combining wind, biogas and hydrogen all into one highly managed energy flow.

Since wind is not always constant, there is a fluctuation in generation. However, the new plant stores wind generated energy in excess as hydrogen, or combines energy with biogas to reach appropriate levels of generation. This is referred to as combined heat and power (CHP).

Nearly 120 Megawatts of wind power are possible, but the area is also well known for biogas generation. The strategy is just one many being investigated as other work in The Netherlands is now also balancing wind generation loads in experiments.

From agricultural crop production to wind measurement and management, geospatial technologies have a bright future in this form of localised energy generation.
