Zero Carbon Real Estate: Slope — Aspect — DEM

Slope, Aspect and Digital Elevation Models (DEM) will all become primary information needed in a changing real estate market dominated by zero carbon homes. The physical placement and location of a home(s) will either increase or decrease their value. Smart developers will look for land with a slope, southerly facing and optimally located elevation wise for improved wind performance.

New requiremements beginning in 2018 across Europe that require zero carbon new construction will drive these changes and data requirements.

There are two options moving forward at that time:

1) Increase the energy efficiency in the building so it uses less energy, thus reducing it to near zero energy.

2) Generate enough energy from the building that it balances energy use.

When we look at this closely we can see a picture of geodata becoming more ingrained into development plans. Insurance reasons, transport, energy and disaster are all events that require more and better pieces of spatial information.
