SPOT Infoterra Group — IGN — Fastracking SDI in Serbia

The Spot Infoterra Group together with the IGN France International have been contracted by Serbia to provide that country with a national spatial data infrastructure.  This builds on the recent merging of Spot Image and Infoterra within the EADS Astrium company which I mentioned here last week.

This is SDI fast tracking - getting geospatial data structure and information services up quickly through web services. There is an important lesson here, particularly for those countries struggling to meet the INSPIRE Directive. In pactice, this is an implementation strategy.

While the concept may not be new, the ability to provide data and a well structured web service environment that supports it is something EADS Astrium Services is uniquely suited to. The Canadian government operates a similar geospatial ability, the US Foreign Agricultural Service is similarly structured. The UK Ordnance Survey also had a strong international presence.
