Cartography: Hand Made 3D Terrain

Kelso Cartography is owned and run by Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso works as cartographer at the Washington Post. You can see some of his Award winning cartography for that newspaper here (well worth a look at all the exceptional cartography). In another article from the same site, he meets with Toni Mair in Switzerland, a terrain artist.

Toni Mair has been creating sculptural, three-dimensional alpine landscape representations since 1972 (that’s over 35 years) and his talent shows. In fact, Toni is one of the only traditional artist still creating these models by hand.

Mair is no ordinary terrain person, he studied with Eduard Imhof (I have just reviewed his book on terrain cartography here). There are several pictures (here) showing the terrains and the techniques that he uses to create the 3D landscapes. In a sense, this does not surprise me (because I reviewed the book and know how connected Imhof felt about terrains). But when you see Mair's work, it explains this visually. Read the article, and look at the pictures, this is exceptional work.
