Geospatial: Ecosystem Based Management Tools

Ecosystem based management (EBM) attempts to include all of the processes and factors involved and associated with an ecosystem. This includes human and non-human factors. Geospatial technologies play a unique role in deciphering these connects, monitoring them and integrating information originating from them toward the development of management sceanarios and strategies. These in turn are useful for new policy development and governance realted issues as well as operational decision making.

Ecosystem Based Management Tools Network provides a wide variety of information about  EBM including a series of tools and demonstrations.  These tools cover topics like, agriculture, water, wastewater. marine, conservation, investment and so on - the list is long.

The Knowledge Network for BioComplexity assists to integrate labs, research sites and global field information together.  Included is an online data registry and a standard data viewing software - Morpho. Marinemap is an open decision support tool for the marine environment.  Kelso Cartography has been doing some mashup work with Marinemap developers and has an interview about the work.

Encora is an EU funded project that is designed to integrate the knowledge flowing from the marine community. The forest simulation group at the University of British Columbia has developed a series of ecosystem based management tools useful for forestry related applications.  Ecosystem MarketPlace is a website that includes a series of tools that are useful to ecological land planners. Meanwhile, The REDD Site discusses payments for ecological services and other economic related activities. Research in Japan at the NIES is also focused on thge development of ecological services tools and includes GIS.
