Picking Wine Grapes By Satellite Images in Bordeaux

French wine growers are turning to satellites as a means to determine when to pick the grapes off the vines in the Bordeaux region. As the grapes approach the best harvest time, images begin to show a reddish colour emanating from the vines. The solution is provided by Infoterra France and is based upon images generated by FORMOSAT-2 - a Taiwanese satellite.

From the articles - “The Oenoview service uses multispectral satellite imagery as the basis for personalized consultancy on vine management. The imagery from Taiwan's FORMOSAT-2 satellite (at 2-metre resolution) is processed using procedures developed by Infoterra to produce a map of vine vigour. These maps are then interpreted by viticulture specialists at the institute to provide technical decision support for winemakers in the field.”
