It is getting harder to understand GLONASS. Russia Today reports that 3 more GLONASS satellites have been launched from Baikonur recently. Apparently the country will be covered for GLONASS use in 2010. Isn’t that what they said about this time last year?
The Russia Today article points out that GLONASS will, in some way I am not familiar with, be able to prevent terrorism on railways. Apparently GLONASS now scans for movements on the landscape.
Supposedly, 9 more satellites will come in 2010 to supplement the current 19.
However, a quick review of the GLONASS website today shows the current number operating has decreased to 16. So, this week’s launch brings us back to the start of 2009.
While Vladimir Putin’s dog enjoys use of GLONASS, the rest of the world is still waiting.
